This vase from the Atelier series by Carstens, a West German company, has a mysterious and modern design that seems like something you'd never see before.
It was made in the 1960s and was designed by Dieter Peter, the designer of the LUXUS series.
It's a very simple idea with red matte donut-shaped rings stacked on top of each other, but it's a rare design and a very rare item.
Brand
[FAT LAVA]
Ceramic products that were actively produced in various parts of Germany in the 1950s-1970s.
As it is called FAT LAVA, it has a texture that resembles molten and solidified lava.
At that time, there were many pottery manufacturers, each selling pottery products with a variety of designs.
The attractive use of glaze and timeless design are popular all over the world.
[Carstens]
The company began as part of a group of porcelain companies founded by Christian Heinrich Carstens in 1900, and grew significantly during his son's generation, but after World War II, all of the factories in East Germany were seized by Russia.
Later, in 1945, he founded "Carsten Tönnieshof" in Tönnieshof, Fredersloh, West Germany, and began producing ceramics in 1947.
The shape and decoration were designed by Trude Carstens, the wife of founder Ernst Carstens, who served as art director until her death in 1965.
Designers included Ingrid Ilgner from 1959, and Rudolf Christmann from 1966.
Carstens' high quality and success led to the company becoming a large company employing over 400 people in 1954.
In the 1970s, the company expanded to include branches overseas, but the ceramic boom died down in the 1980s, and Carsten Tönnieshof closed its doors in 1984.
